This basket was lovingly handcrafted by BaTonga women artisans in the Munyumbwe region of southern Zambia.
Nyami Nyami is the river god of the BaTonga people, believed to dwell in the Zambezi River, in what is now Lake Kariba.
His presence is a reminder of the life-giving power of the river's waters.
Legend holds that he bears the head of a fish — the staple food of the BaTonga before they were displaced from the Zambezi to make way for the dam — and the body of a water serpent.
To weave these baskets, the artisans work primarily with palm leaves (malala), small branches (nsamu) and creeping vine (tende) — robust, natural materials that lend exceptional longevity to each piece.
Baskets hold a cherished place in Tonga culture, traditionally gifted to young women upon marriage.
They serve a practical purpose too, used for winnowing, storing harvested grain, and presenting dry foods.
Approximate dimensions: diameter 60 cm, height 40 cm.
